Master GardenerMaster Gardener Annual Report The Arkansas Master Gardener Program grew to almost 3000 total members in 2009 (2,954) These Master Gardeners reported 84,619 learning hours and 100,506 service hours. Advisory board hours totaled 843 hours. Using the figure $20.25 per hour rate from the Independent Sector, this had an impact of $3,767,087.25 on the state of Arkansas. Thank you Master Gardeners for educating and beautifying the state of Arkansas. Arkansas adopted the Master Gardener program in 1988 in four counties (Garland, Jefferson, Pulaski, and Saline), and it has since expanded to 62 counties. The newest counties to join the program are Lee, Phillips and Mississippi. At A Glance The University of Arkansas Master Gardeners sponsor events that support youth gardening, plant therapy work with hospitals and nursing homes, city beautification, and horticulture information. Over 20 other county and regional horticultural fairs or shows are coordinated annually by Master Gardeners with great success. Master Gardeners from across the state come together to sponsor the Arkansas Flower & Garden Show annually to promote horticulture within the state. This event is coordinated with the help of Master Gardeners and was staffed entirely by Master Gardeners. On average, over 10,000 Arkansans visited the three-day show. The University of Arkansas Master Gardeners hold an annual state meeting which is hosted and coordinated by a different local program each year. This two-day event provides the opportunity to participate in workshops, seminars, tour local private and public gardens, and visit with other Master Gardeners. This event has reached the maximum capacity of 500 each year. |
