Gomphrena
('Gnome Purple' and 'Buddy Purple')

There are two selections of gomphrena or globe amaranth, chosen this year. While the plants do come in a variety of colors, including pink, red and white, the committee chose the purple color in both selections as a better performer. ‘Gnome Purple’ is a more compact or dwarf selection of this annual. It will grow six inches in height and should be planted 10 to 12 inches apart. The ‘Buddy Purple’ plant will grow about twelve inches tall and about ten inches wide. Both plants are very heat tolerant and will bloom until frost. Don’t plant until after frost in the spring. Gomphrena grows best in a well drained, fertile soil. The flowers are clover-like in shape, and can be used as a bedding plant and an everlasting. For dried flowers, cut the blooms when fully open and hang to dry.
