Lenten Rose
(Helleborus orientalis)
This shade-loving perennial is one of the most dependable plants for the dry
shade found in many Arkansas gardens. It ushers in spring with lots of slightly
nodding two-inch flowers borne at the top of the plant. Most plants are grown
from seed so the colors usually are in shades of white, lime green or pink.
Because the plant flowers so early, the blooms remain effective for at least six
weeks. If in a good location, the plant will produce a few seedlings beneath its
lush foliage that can be transplanted to other areas of the garden. The
summertime foliage is a coarse textured deep green. The foliage is evergreen,
producing a new flush of leaves as flowers begin appearing. Lenten Rose is not
bothered by any serious insect or disease problems.
