Japanese Snowbell
(Styrax japonicus)
One of the interesting small flowering trees available from nurseries this
spring is the Japanese Snowbell. In trials conducted in Hope, Little Rock and
Fayetteville, this tree has been a consistently good performer. The tree is well
suited for a small patio planting or near an entry where it can be viewed
close-up. It reaches 25 to 30 feet tall and is often wider than high. In May,
after the foliage is out, Japanese Snowbell trees are covered with clusters of
bell-shaped, white flowers that hang beneath the leaves.
- Height: 25 to 30 feet.
- Spread: 25 to 35 feet.
- Hardiness: Throughout the state and as far north as zone 6.
- Planting Season: Most plants are container grown so can be
planted at any time.
- Cultural Comments: Best suited to full sun or light shade in a
good, well-drained garden soil. Avoid heavy clay soils. Keep the tree
watered during dry seasons, but otherwise little is needed in the way of
special care. No serious diseases or insects are reported.
