Homestead Purple Verbena
(Verbena ‘Homestead Purple’)

One of the most outstanding garden performers in recent years has been this rambunctious perennial found growing more or less wild in a garden in Georgia. Homestead Purple is a fast-growing trailing perennial verbena that is covered with blooms all season long. The color is a deep, rich purple that is an excellent foil for pastel colors in the garden. The plant is tough and shrugs off hot, dry and humid weather without hesitation.

  • Height: 8 inches.
  • Spread: 3 feet.
  • Hardiness: Hardy throughout the state, but unusually wet winters may cause it to die out.
  • Planting Season: Plant after the danger of frost is past.
  • Cultural Comments: Site this plant in full sun in any reasonable soil and stand back. It will grow without much care, but if given even routine watering and fertilization, it will reward the efforts by providing extra flowers. If the plant begins to look a bit unkempt, cut back and regrow the top.
