Virginia Sweetspire or Itea Itea virginica 'Henry's Garnet' or 'Saturnalia'Virginia Sweetspire or Itea is a native woody shrub that has received a lot of attention in the nursery trade over the last decade. Plants are ideal for massing and informal groupings where it creates an open naturalistic appearance. In the spring the plant has showy drooping, 6-inch long racemes of flowers produced as the leaves appear. In the fall the 6-inch long leaves take on a brilliant red fall color that lasts up to six weeks. Plants spread by underground rhizomes. Henry's Garnet is the most common Itea in nurseries, but Saturnalia was selected from the wild by Arkansas Larry Lowman of Wynne.
