Summer Wave Wishbone Flower
Torenia hybrida 'Summer Wave'

Picture of Summer Wave Wishbone Flower.

Summer Wave Wishbone Flower is an exciting new hanging basket plant that offers a new twist for this relatively uncommon plant. The lavender-purple blooms have an open throat and remind one of a snapdragon, a close relative. The plant, a native of China, was developed by European plant breeders to have a trailing habit, unlike most wishbone flowers which form small, freely-branched plants. Inside the throat of the flower is a wishbone-shaped stamen, which gives the plant its common name.

  • Height: 6 inches.
  • Spread: 24 inches.
  • Sun: Shade to part sun.
  • Planting Season: The plant should not go outside until after the threat of frost is past.
  • Cultural Comments: Wishbone flowers require frequent attention to watering and should be fertilized with a liquid houseplant fertilizer every two to four weeks. The plant could be used in the front of a flower border, but keep the plant watered as it does not have great drought tolerance.
