Purple Coneflower
Echinacea purpurea
Purple Coneflower–Echinacea purpurea variety 'Magnus'. Selected
as the perennial plant of the year in 1998 by the Perennial Plant Association,
'Magnus' has a compact growth habit, and blooms for a long period of time. With
its shorter height, it should fit into most flower beds easily. It has broad,
flat pink to carmine, daisy-like flowers with a brown cone center. The flowers
are favorites of butterflies. This particular variety will get no taller than 30
inches and was developed by Swedish nurseryman Magnus Nilsson, who at age 90 is
still actively working with plants. This perennial will do well in full sun to
partial shade, but we find that the color is more bold if it is lightly
protected from the hottest afternoon sun. It should be a long lived perennial in
your garden, and long blooming provided you deadhead spent flowers. This
perennial should be available as a container grown plant statewide.
