(May) My mother
has wild blackberries in her flower beds. I have dug, pulled out roots and they
still come back. How can I permanently get rid of them without killing her
flowers? I need to say that she is located on the side of a hill that has good
soil, but rocky and the roots are down in that rocky soil.
Blackberries, and other brambles, are very difficult to kill. Tilling the soil (which is hard in a rocky soil) and then raking out as many roots as possible should help. There is no spray that will kill the blackberries without damaging the flowers -- if fact, most sprays would have more effect on the flowers than on the blackberries. Spot spraying with round-up -- just on what you want to kill should also help. Don't expect to do one treatment and have the problem solved-it is going to take diligence to completely eradicate them.
