Weeds - Virginia Buttonweed
Back to Weeds

'Q' (Question)  (August) Virginia Button Weed is taking over the yard. What will kill it? MSMA and 2-4-D will not. I have a big yard and need to treat all of it. Any suggestions?

'A' (Answer)  Virginia buttonweed is a tough weed problem. I referred this question to our weed specialist, and this was his response: dynamite will not kill Virginia buttonweed! Have a lawn care service apply Manor (metsulfuron) at 1/2 ounce per acre plus a surfactant. Not perfect, but works pretty well. Make two applications about 6 weeks apart starting in June. Use only on Bermuda grass and St. Augustine at this rate. Or, there is another product called Confront (triclopyr + clopyralid) which does a similar job if applied twice at 1.5 parts/acre. This will injure warm season grasses. Use only on Bermuda and zoysia and tall fescue. Have a lawn care company do the applications. Same timing as Manor. Do not expect complete control from either program. Control is variable from year to year and suppression is probably a more accurate description of what to expect.
