Vines - Pepper Vine
Back to Vines

'Q' (Question)  We have a wild bush that sends out vines that have grown to the top of the telephone pole--it grabs anything it can. There are no flowers. It seems to be impossible to stop their growth. What is it? Should we bulldoze it out? (Holiday Island)

'A' (Answer)  The plant in question is a pepper vine -- Ampelopsis arborea. It is sprawling and climbing vine. It does produce tiny, non-descript flowers in the spring, and then can bear small black fruits in the fall. It can be invasive, but some people actually like the looks of it as a vine. If you want to get rid of it, cut it severely back, spray with a product such as Round-up and watch for signs of new growth in the spring. If you keep after it, it can be controlled.
