Vines - Morning Glory
Back to Vines

'Q' (Question)  (July) Many of us in our neighborhood have planted morning glory vines this year. They are growing very well, but no flowers. Why don't any of us in Hot Springs have flowers on our Morning Glory vines? Is there something we can do to help them start flowering?

'A' (Answer)  Have you been fertilizing them a lot? It also could be all the rain we have had. Anything that makes the plants grow rapidly, can keep them in a vegetative state, and keep them from setting flowers. Morning glories tend to do better in poorer sites. Depending on who's growing them, they are often considered a weed. Try to let them get a bit on the dry side, and don't use any extra nitrogen. You could use a little super phosphate and see if that, in combination, can slow down the growth and begin setting some flowers.

'Q' (Question)  I planted morning glories this spring at the side of our porch. It gets all morning sun. The vines are growing like crazy, but there are hardly any blooms. What did I do wrong? I had visualized a solid wall of blooms each morning.

'A' (Answer)  It is possible that the soil is too rich in this area, or you have given them too much nitrogen. Morning glories grow well anywhere there is sunlight, and will fare well in poor soil. Avoid any more nitrogen around them, and use some super phosphate to see if you can’t encourage more blooms before frost. Once they bloom well, they usually freely reseed themselves, coming up all over in consecutive years. So, learn to identify the seedlings, to keep them contained for future years.
