Vines - Hydrangea Vine
Back to Vines

'Q' (Question)  The problem that we have now is our hydrangea vine. We planted two. One of each side of an arbor leading into our back yard. The nurseryman said that they probably would not bloom the first year. He was right. They have not bloomed for the following two years either! The vines are healthy and growing well. They are in the shade, one side more so than the other. We fertilize only once (in the spring) per the nurseryman's instructions. We would certainly appreciate any advice that you can offer.

'A' (Answer)  Climbing hydrangeas take their sweet time in getting established and growing before they ever think about blooming. It is not unusual to wait several years before seeing your first bloom. Be patient, because once they begin blooming, they will do so annually, and they are quite attractive. Let them form their matting network of vines, and in time, you will have flowers.
