Vegetables - Turnip
Back to Vegetables

'Q' (Question)  I planted turnip greens for a fall crop and had fresh greens up through December. Then the freeze hit and I thought they were gone. Now I see them growing again, and there are turnips. Should I allow them to continue growing or should I dig them up?

'A' (Answer)  Turnip greens are often used as a winter cover crop and will die back with severe cold, but can resprout. Sometimes you will be rewarded with some giant turnips as well as the greens that grow back. Enjoy them as long as the space isn’t needed for a new crop.

'Q' (Question)  When preparing the soil to plant turnips, is it advisable to plow in fertilizer such as ammonium nitrate before sowing the seed or after?

'A' (Answer)  When preparing the soil, broadcast a complete fertilizer, such as 13-13-13 at a rate of 3 to 4 pounds per 100 foot row or 300 square feet. Using a balanced fertilizer would be better for seedling establishment, rather than using just nitrogen in the ammonium nitrate form.
