I was thinking about planting a couple of rows of sugar cane in my garden this
year just for fun, but I cant find out anything about how to do it, or where to
get the seeds or cane-cuttings. My great-uncle who lives down in Ashley County
near the Louisiana line used to grow it, but I don't know if it will grow as far
north as Little Rock. I had heard that sorghum probably would, but I don't know
anything about that, either. Any suggestions?
Sugarcane is a crop for only sub-tropical regions of the country. It requires 8 to 24 months to reach maturity. The temperatures need to be high enough to permit rapid growth for 8 months or more. It would more than likely freeze out over the winter here. As to grain sorghum, it is well adapted to Arkansas, and you could grow it and expect a harvest. Your biggest problem will be in finding the seed. Grain sorghum is usually only sold in 50 pound bags. You might find a farmer who grows it who might be willing to sell you a smaller quantity.
