(October)
I have a star jasmine in a pot. Last year you told me to put it in the garage
over the winter and I did. It did very well. My problem is I can not get it to
bloom!!! No matter what fertilizer I use, it stays green. The plant is healthy
as a horse, with no flowers. It only gets the morning sun for approximately four
hours. When, if ever, should you prune it?
It is probably too late this year to make a difference, but I would say the problem is lack of sun. Star jasmine will bloom best with a minimum of 6 -8 hours of sunlight. Although not a true jasmine, Trachelospermum jasminoides, it gets the common name star jasmine from its jasmine scented flowers. I have seen it bloom sporadically in less light, but for the best blooms, increase the light. You may also want to repot it to a larger container, and shear it back lightly when you bring it back out, to get continued new growth, where blooms will occur. Sometimes, if the plant is rootbound, it will be a nice green plant, with limited new growth, and therefore, limited flowers. For the past several years, Star jasmine has been overwintering in the ground from central Arkansas south.
