Tropicals - Sago Palm
Back to Tropicals

'Q' (Question)  (August) We brought a sago pup with us from Orlando in October. It has survived the winter in a pot and has "poofed" with new fronds. We were surprised over the weekend when we visited friends in Atlanta, TX, and they had purchased some to put in their yards. Will they survive the winters in Arkansas? We had grown ours to about 6 feet tall in Orlando and they were nice specimens which we hated to leave behind. We'd appreciate any info/suggestions you have for growing them in Arkansas, as my husband has researched their heritage and loves them.

'A' (Answer)  Sago palms are proving winter hardy from central Arkansas south. I have even seen a few in the more northern parts of the state. But do keep in mind, that we haven't had a terrible winter in a long time. Yes, I know we have had some horrendous ice storms, but really cold temperatures, or major fluctuations are what can kill plants. I would go ahead and plant your sago palm in the ground, and add some extra mulch when winter arrives, and they should survive.
