Trees - Walnut
Back to Trees

'Q' (Question)  I need your help badly. We have a beautiful English walnut tree. When the mean worms invaded it, there were at least a bushel of nuts on the tree. They stripped the tree. They were fuzzy little creatures in a white web. The tree looked like a heavy fog had covered it. Same thing happened to the pecan tree. What can be done? (Malvern)

'A' (Answer)  I think you are talking about the fall webworm. They form large webs in trees and can consume major foliage. They usually don’t eat the nuts themselves, but can defoliate sections of trees. They are usually more a nuisance than anything else. Keep a close watch on the trees during the growing season, and catch the insects as they get started--destroying the webs. Orchards that follow routine spray schedules are usually not bothered by these pests.
