Trees - Planting
Back to Trees

'Q' (Question)  (August) I have a Japanese maple that is about 6 ft tall in the back yard and I want to move it to the front yard. When is the best time to do this without harming the tree? It was a very expensive tree and I don't want to lose it.

'A' (Answer)  The best season to move a tree (or to plant a tree) is fall. November is an ideal month, since the trees are going dormant, yet the soil temperature still has some residual heat. The roots can get established while the tops are dormant, which should give you a stronger transplant by next spring. Do pay attention to moisture levels throughout the winter, and water as needed. Mulching is also beneficial.

'Q' (Question)  Is it a good idea to plant trees and/or shrubs this time of year? Are there any that should definitely not be planted now? Thank you for your time.

'A' (Answer)  Any balled in burlap trees or shrubs, or bare root plants SHOULD be planted at this time of year, since they need to be planted when dormant. Container grown plants can be planted at any time of the year. Some you may want to avoid planting in the middle of winter are those plants which may be moderately hardy, like gardenias, hydrangeas, etc. For the most part, if you can find the variety you are looking for and you have the time to plant, go for it.
