Trees - Monkey Puzzle Tree
Back to Trees

'Q' (Question)  I am writing to try and gain some information. This past December, I was in Seattle, Washington. During my visit there, I was astounded to see a beautiful tree. I asked and found out it was called a monkey tree. Could you please tell me if they are adaptable to this area, and where one could be located and purchased. Any information you could come up with would be greatly appreciated.

'A' (Answer)  The monkey tree, Araucaria araucana, is also commonly called the Monkey Puzzle tree or Chilean Pine. It is related to the Norfolk Island Pine. The tree is considered hardy to zone 7--central Arkansas, however, we have seen a little damage to them in hard winters. It grows quite large at maturity, reaching 50 -80 feet in height. While not overly common in the nursery trade in Arkansas, if you ask your local nurseryman, they should be able to locate one for you. It would need a protected spot to survive as far north as you are.
