Trees - Hawthorn
Back to Trees

'Q' (Question)  What my mother called Parsley Haw grows wild in our South Arkansas hills. In which family does this deciduous holly belong? It has leaves like parsley and blooms like an early crab and has red berries in the winter. (Eudora)

'A' (Answer)  I would say the tree in question is a hawthorn, not a holly. There are numerous hawthorn trees that do well in Arkansas, but the one with the parsley-like foliage is usually Crataegus marshallii. They typically have thorns on the branches, beautiful flowers and fruit, and often quite beautiful bark.
