We have a small tree in our yard that is called a "Grancy Gray Beard" locally. It
is covered with seed. I would like to plant a few. Should I plant now, or dry
them and plant next spring?
Grancy Grey Beard, or Chinese Fringe tree is a fabulous native tree. The seeds can be used for propagation, but the process is slow. Harvest the seed after they turn purple this fall. Remove the outer pulp from the seed and clean it. Stratify the seeds (place the seeds in a plastic bag filled with moist sand and peat moss) at room temperature for thirty days, then continue the stratification at 40 degrees for two more months. Then after this process they can be planted. Direct sowing outside can work, but it may be the second spring before they emerge.
