Trees - Flowering Cherry
Back to Trees

'Q' (Question)  (May) Late March I planted a kwanzan flowering cherry tree; it was approximately 6 feet tall. It had a few blooms on it in addition to the leaves. All the blooms died and now all the lower leaves have died, only a few green ones are still at the very top. It gets full sun in the afternoon. What do you think is wrong?

'A' (Answer)  Cherry trees are very sensitive to wet soils, so make sure the drainage is good. Has anything been sprayed around it? Did you fertilize in the planting hole? This can burn the roots. The flowers should be gone by now–it is a spring bloomer only. There is usually a little leaf drop during the transition period of establishment, but not as much as you are having. I would investigate before you completely lose the tree.
