Trees - Elm
Back to Trees

'Q' (Question)  What was a very pretty elm tree has I’m told, Dutch elm disease. It looks pretty sick. Is there anything that can be done for this?

'A' (Answer)  Elm trees often suffer from insect problems as well as leaf spotting diseases. When the trees begin to look bad, which is frequently, Dutch elm disease is immediately thought of as the culprit. There is no control for this disease, but you need to be sure that is the cause. Take a branch that is at least one inch in diameter, with yellowed or damaged leaves, approximately a foot in length. Take this to your county extension office and have them send it to the disease diagnostic clinic for diagnosis. This is a free service provided by the cooperative extension service. Remember, when sending plant samples in, make sure there is life left in them. It is hard to tell what killed a dead plant.
