Trees - Chinese Pistache
Back to Trees

'Q' (Question)  (October) I have a Chinese pistache tree that I planted approx. 2 years ago. It is about 12 to 15 feet tall. The tree had some bag worms in the top and as I was attempting to pull the upper branch down so that I could spray the worms the branch snapped off, splitting down the main trunk about 4 inches, leaving a large wound and making the tree now lopsided. I covered the wound with white glue. I hate to start over and plant a new tree, but would you advise so, or do you think the tree can recover?

'A' (Answer)  The tree will recover if you treat it properly. Just covering the wound with glue is not going to help much. Make sure that you have pruned out the cut edges, leaving behind as smooth of a wound as you can. Wound dressings are not necessary. Next spring, you will probably get at least two sprouts at this site. You can begin to selectively prune to help even out the growth and shape of the tree.
