Trees - Catalpa
Back to Trees

'Q' (Question)  Can catalpa trees be started from the seeds that are hanging in the long pods? There seems to be nothing in these pods when broken open, only dried pulp looking stuff, and maybe some very tiny seeds.

'A' (Answer)  Catalpa trees can be started from seed. The seeds are harvested from fall through winter when the pods have turned brown. Each pod should contain numerous oblong, thin and papery, winged seeds ( approximately one to two inches long and one fourth inch wide), which bear tufts of hair at each end. The seed should be stored dry and cool. The seed will germinate without pre-treatment. Sow the seed outdoors in late spring after the soil has warmed up, and cover it lightly with soil. Germination can be as quick as two weeks or slightly longer depending on soil temperature.
