Shrubs - Snowball Bush
Back to Shrubs

'Q' (Question)  I have a snowball bush which needs pruning. When should I do this? It has just finished blooming.

'A' (Answer)  The snowball bush is Viburnum opulus. Any pruning which is needed, should be done now. Prune out some of the older, less productive canes, and shape as needed. Fertilize and water, and the plant should fill it in nicely.

'Q' (Question)  I have a snowball bush that produces flat flowers versus the desirable round flower heads. Now they have pretty berries forming. What can I do to encourage the round flower heads? Is there any pruning or fertilization that can be done? (Pocahontas)

'A' (Answer)  I doubt you have a snowball bush. Snowball bush typically has sterile flowers -- so there would be no fruit. I bet you bought a different variety of viburnum -- maybe the doublefile viburnum, and this will always have the flat flower clusters, and wonderful berries. They are both in the viburnum family, but this is a large family, and in my opinion, an underutilized group of plants.

'Q' (Question)  When should I prune my Double File Viburnum? This bush also has grown bigger than I expected, so I really need to take out some of the bulk.

'A' (Answer)  Lastly, the doublefile viburnum is also a spring bloomer. Wait until after bloom and prune as needed. Remember, these plants have the potential for large growth, so I hope you have it planted where there is room to grow.
