Shrubs - Golden Currant
Back to Shrubs

'Q' (Question)  I would like for you to identify the enclosed plant for me. At the present time it is about four to four and a half feet tall. It bloomed in either June or July with small yellow flowers. It has several branches coming from the ground. I would like to know what it is.

'A' (Answer)  By looking at it with its distinct buds and lobed foliage, I would say it is a Golden or Spice currant, Ribes odoratum. Unfortunately this plant blooms in the spring, not in the summer. The flowers are yellow and have a very spicy fragrance. It forms a mounding shrub with many suckers coming at the base. It is a nice plant for spring fragrance. Watch it this year to see when it blooms. If it is in the summer again, send me a flower.
