Shade Gardening - General Information
Back to Shade Gardening

'Q' (Question) (May) Would you please recommend some plants for a shaded yard. We have a terraced lawn that only receives limited afternoon sun. On the northwest side of the house we have Hosta and ferns planted which do very well but we have one bed empty that we have been trying to fill. I would like to have something that trails down from the terrace over the sides that would (hopefully) bloom. Water is no problem as we have a sprinkler system. We live in Russellville so winters are pretty mild and summers are not too hot. Any help would be appreciated.

'A' (Answer) There are numerous plants for shade, and I do think many of them are showy. I really like creeping jenny -- it has bright yellow-green foliage, but doesn't bloom. Vinca is a vine that does bloom, but it can be a bit invasive if you are using other perennials. For shade blooming perennials, try celandine or woodland poppy, foxglove, Solomon's seal, heuchera, crested iris, and perennial begonia. There are also shrubs -- drooping leucothoe would be one that could cascade down, but there are many other shrubs. Visit your local nursery and see what is available, and start planting.
