(June) I have a
Mimosa Tree which was a volunteer from a friend's yard. I have had it for 3
years. Each summer something bites or chews the limbs off. I have used bug spray
and deer repellant with some success, but I am not sure what is eating on it.
Whatever it is does not bother anything else in the yard. We have had some deer
in past years, but we have not seen them this summer.
What would eat the leaves and stems and not leave a trace? I know that Mimosa Trees are considered "trash" trees, but I really do love them when they are in bloom.
I would guess you have some type of animal eating the tree. Insects usually don't cut off small limbs. Unless the entire plant is gone, I would doubt it is a deer, since they would usually eat the whole thing--not just the lower limbs. The only foolproof thing for animal control is some type of physical barrier--keeping them away. It may not be the most attractive thing, but hopefully if you keep them away, they may look elsewhere for their food.
