Perennials - St. John's Wort
Back to Perennials

'Q' (Question)  (May) I received a beautiful floral arrangement for Mothers Day that included three stems of leaves with bright red berries and each berry had a little green leaf collar type growth which may have been the outside of the bud from which the berries emerged. The leaves were about 2-3 inches long, shaped like a pear, with visible "veins".A lady at the florist told me it was probably a Hypericum plant. I would love to plant these berries if they would grow. Would you give me some advice about what I may be able to do with them?

'A' (Answer)  I do think it is a Hypericum, but I am not sure which Hypericum it is, so I am not sure how summer hardy it would be in Arkansas--many prefer cooler climates. However, most Hypericum seeds root without pre-treatment according to the literature, so give it a shot. I have seen the berry stems, and to produce such large berries, I am sure the yellow flowers are impressive. When they begin to grow, give the plants a morning sun exposure.
