Enclosed is a picture
of a plant we have had for some time. It originally belonged to my wives
grandmother, so it is an old plant. We have never seen a bloom like this one. We
were wondering if you could tell us what it is, and where could we get more like
it?
The plant in question is commonly called a spider lily or Peruvian daffodil, Hymenocallis. Some varieties are not winter hardy as I assume is your type, since it is growing in a pot. There is a native species which you can see all over south Arkansas from May through August in moist areas. It looks almost identical to your plant, with the exception of narrower leaves. Hymenocallis produce two to three foot tall bulbous plants, and are members of the amaryllis family. The flowers are normally white and fragrant, but there are yellow blooming varieties. They have a spider-like appearance with a central cup and slender petals. Check with local nurseries or mail order the bulbs.
