I have enclosed a leaf
which is alternate on a stem 2-3 feet tall, plus a snapshot of flower. Our
daughter, when living in Japan, sent me several corms of this plant. It is now
growing in my Arkansas garden--but not blooming. I am anxious to give it proper
care. Is it possible for you to identify the plant, both common and botanical
name. What type of care -- light, moisture, and feeding requirements? Any
information would be appreciated.
The plant in question is a ginger plant, Zingiber. They have some of the sweetest smelling flowers around. Gingers are moderately hardy in Arkansas, but in south Arkansas, with winter protection, they should survive outside. They grow best in rich soil, high in organic matter. They need some protection from the hot afternoon sun, but do need sunlight to produce blooms. They like to be kept moist, but will not tolerate waterlogged conditions. If you want to be assured of winter survival, lift and store the roots after the first frost, or grow the plant inside.
