Perennials - Agapanthus
Back to Perennials

'Q' (Question)  I bought a plant called "Star of the Nile" in the Gulf Shores, AL, area last summer. The foliage reminds me of an amaryllis, except the "bloom" is a cluster of blooms on a four foot stalk. The blooms lasted for nearly two months, and it has put out three or four little plants around the base of the main plant (I suppose it's a bulb).

I have been trying to find the plant on the internet so I can encourage it to bloom again. It's currently in my garage and appears happy there. Can't find the plant on the internet to get care instructions.  Any idea regarding the scientific name?

'A' (Answer)  I believe you are referring to an agapanthus. Are the blooms blue in color? There are a few white varieties, but blue is the predominant color. They would be marginally hardy in south Arkansas, so bringing them in to a garage for moderate winter protection is a good idea. Next spring, as you move them outdoors, divide the daughter plants from the mother plant. They can be kept in containers year-round, or planted and dug up in the fall. Give them full sun to partial shade, water regularly and feed monthly during the growing season. When I was in Sacramento, California a few summers ago, that was the main plant you saw. They are interesting, but not reliably hardy here.
