Lawns - Ryegrass
Back to Lawns

'Q' (Question)  I planted ryegrass seed in a bare spot in my yard in December. The weather had been so mild I hoped it could germinate to give me some cover until spring. Then it got colder, and I still see the seeds, but nothing has started growing. What will happen to this seed? Will it be killed off this winter?

'A' (Answer)  Unless we have extended warm weather this winter, which I am not hoping for, it will sit on the ground until spring temperatures warm the soil, and then you should see germination. Cold weather shouldn’t kill the seed, but could damage young seedlings. The only reason you may lose the seed is if it is planted on a slope, and it washes away.
