My fescue grass that I
planted this spring, looked good for a while, but it is really beginning to thin
out with this heat. How often should I be watering, and is there anything I can
do to salvage this lawn?
Fescue likes a cooler climate, and we often experience some die back with our summers. This year I would suspect, we’ll see even more damage. Fescue needs 2- 3 inches of water per week, as opposed to 1- 1 ½ inches for warm season grasses. Soil types and number of trees can also alter the needs. If your lawn is exposed to any sunlight, and you have a sprinkler system, you might also try to cool down the lawn a little with a quick spritz mid day. Then water deeply two to three times a week. Fescue will need overseeding every fall to keep it thick. For now, keeping it alive can be a struggle.
What type grass seed
can I plant that will succeed under oaks in shaded areas? Also, I had some older
azaleas that died at a house we've just purchased. Is there any way to determine
the type of replacement to purchase, and how to figure out whether they need
'white' or 'red/pink' flowering varieties?

In Jonesboro, tall fescue should be a viable option for seeding. Seed it in the fall between mid September and October. Choose one of the turf type tall fescues. The only way to know what color azalea you have is by letting them bloom, then taking a cutting to the nursery to match colors.
