Lawns - Diseases
Back to Lawns

'Q' (Question)  I am in the first week of a 3-week cycle of Daconil for brown patch in my lawn. When can I next feed my lawn?

'A' (Answer)  Complete the fungicide cycle. Fertilize in late August for one last application of fertilizer for the season. I would opt for a complete fertilizer, and be sure to water it in. Often brown patch occurs on lawns that are well cared for. High fertility is not desired when you are having the problem.

'Q' (Question)  I have had some unusual growths on my lawn. They appeared before the heavy rains, and seem to have disappeared almost as quickly after the rain. They were a bright yellow color and covered about a three foot patch in my lawn. It looked almost as if someone painted the grass. Then I looked after the rain, and it was gone. What do you think it was, and what should I do if it reappears?

'A' (Answer)  This has been a year for diseases, with slime mold in particular. Slime mold is a very basic fungus disease, and it can take a wide range of colors, from bright yellow to white, blue and orange. If you were to rub it off, it would feel oily to the touch. Fortunately, it looks worse than it is. A strong spray of water (or rain) can easily take care of it. Hopefully it won’t be back. If it should reoccur, and it bothers you, almost any general fungicide will control it.
