Insects - Slugs
Back to Insects

'Q' (Question)  I have a real problem. I have slugs in my small fenced in back yard. They are averaging two to four inches long. They keep crawling on my patio carpet and leaving white streaks. I have tried beer and salt to no avail. To make the problem even worse, I have a puppy who tries to eat them and they make her sick. With a puppy, I hardly want to put out any poison that will harm her. What can I do?

'A' (Answer)  Definitely don’t use the poison baits as they can be attractive to dogs and potentially harmful. Try putting out some other baits--try using rinds of melons, oranges, etc. and laying them on their sides out around the patio. Go outside at night or early morning, and throw them away. Dog food is also a good bait where you can trap them (and then dispose of them), but the dog would also be attracted to that. Investigate the area in your backyard and see what conditions you have that are conducive to slugs--usually high organic matter areas with plenty of moisture. Putting a physical barrier around your patio with something rough like cinders, egg shells or sweetgum balls may be enough of a deterrent to keep them out. Good luck!!
