Insects - Mosquitoes
Back to Insects

'Q' (Question)  I have a container with a water lily that is ok, but I have mosquito larva and I need to know how to get rid of them. I do not plan on a fish this year so I was wondering if I could put some diazinon in the water. How much and how often? Thanks-- (and my neighbors thank you too)

'A' (Answer)  The easiest and safest thing to do for mosquito larvae would be to buy what is commonly sold as "mosquito dunks". This is a formulation of Bacillus thuringiensis specifically for mosquitoes. They are sold in donut shaped floating "briquettes" and last for up to 30 days each. Check local nurseries for availability. A drop of two of oil on the water can also help, but how that effects the plants in the heat of summer, I am not sure.
