Houseplants - Palm
Back to Houseplants

'Q' (Question)  I was given a Majesty palm plant (Ravenea rivularis) as a gift. I would prefer to keep this plant indoors, but the nursery card accompanying the plant only gives its requirements for planting outside. The plant is too large to keep in my house near a window, so at the present time, it is in the center of a closed in porch--without heat or air conditioning. It receives medium light. Several leaves have already turned brown and have been removed. Can you please advise me if they can be used permanently as a houseplant, and if so, what are the requirements for care? (Arkadelphia)

'A' (Answer)  Ravenea rivularis, is not winter hardy in Arkansas. The minimum winter temperature is 28 Degrees. I would treat it like any other palm, and give it bright, indirect light, and let it dry slightly between watering. These plants are susceptible to spider mites, so keep an eye out for that. Browning of foliage is usually indicative of poor watering habits, but yours may be getting hot on that unairconditioned porch this season.
