Houseplants - Dracena
Back to Houseplants

'Q' (Question)  I have two dracena plants which have grown rather tall. They have twisted a lot near the top, because they are seeking light. Both have several "branches" or trunks. One has a branch which has died at the top and seems to need pruning. Can you advise me when and how much of the plant I should prune?

'A' (Answer)  The family of dracenas is fairly broad, from miniature trees to lower growing forms. I would guess you have either a dragon tree dracena, or a corn plant dracena, from your description. Both of these can have multiple trunks with clusters of leaves at the top of the stem. Extremely low light can cause problems, and even diminish the stalk size. They can be cut back to within an inch or two of the pot and still sprout out. However, unless you increase the light intensity, you won’t end up with very good results.
