I received a bromeliad
this year. It had a bright yellow flower on top. It has two new green plants
(shoots or babies) coming from the bottom of the plant. Can I plant these to
make new plants? If so, how do I remove them? I have followed the directions I
received with the plant, but nothing was said about replanting or fertilizing. I
fertilize the rest of my houseplants once a month, but have not fertilized the
bromeliad. Should I do so?
There are numerous bromeliads on the market. Some of the plants die back after bloom, but set numerous pups (or babies) around the base of the mother plant before she dies. These can either be pulled off the plant or cut off and replanted. Put them in a relatively small pot to begin with, since most bromeliads have small root systems. Fertilize once or twice a year during the active growing season. Fertilizing monthly on any houseplant, I think is too much. If your plants are growing well, once a year will usually suffice, unless you move them outside for the summer.
