Herbs - Sage
Back to Herbs

'Q' (Question)  I was given a sage bush and it is blooming with purple flowers. Do they make seed, or what should I do with them? I need to know more about this plant. I have it planted in my garden.

'A' (Answer)  I am assuming you are referring to the herb sage. Sage is a perennial herb, which should come back year after year. Plant it where it gets a half day of sunlight. It would benefit from a little shade in the hottest part of the day, if possible. If you are growing it for its uses in cooking, you should harvest it frequently to keep it growing fuller. Typically we don’t allow these to bloom unless we are trying to produce seeds for other plants. There are numerous other ornamental salvias, that produce beautiful flowers.
