Fruits & Nuts - Jujube
Back to Fruits & Nuts

'Q' (Question)  We moved into our home about six months ago. The lot is covered in trees, mostly pecan. The enclosed sample is one we don’t know, nor does anyone else. We would appreciate any information you can give us. The blooms are tiny white. The fruit is a very light green until to mid to last of September, then it turns a very bright red. Thank you. Is the fruit edible?

'A' (Answer)  The plant in question is commonly called a jujube or Chinese date, Ziziphus jujuba. The fruit is edible and often used as a substitute for dates, being similar in flavor and consistency. It grows to be a small tree or large shrub, usually fifteen to twenty feet. It is hardy to -15 degrees, and will grow in any well drained soil.
