Fruits & Nuts - General Information
Back to Fruits & Nuts

'Q' (Question)  (June) We recently moved here from Ohio, and I need some information about what varieties of fruit trees and berries I can grow here. I have been told that raspberries and gooseberries aren't a good match here, but I like all kinds. Where is the best place to go to get information on what grows here and how to grow it?

'A' (Answer)  You asked just in the nick of time! Every other year there is a field day at the University of Arkansas Fruit Substation in Clarksville, and this is the year for it. The event begins this Wednesday, June 29 at 8:30 a.m. and ends with a free lunch. This experiment station does research on almost all fruit crops grown in Arkansas. Not only will you be able to sample the different varieties of fruits that are in season now, but you will also be able to look at the different crops in season, see the various pruning methods, and learn about spray schedules. This free field day is open to the public. You can also visit the extension website at www.uaex.edu and find information on varieties of fruit, culture and care, or visit your local county extension office. For more information on the field day call 479-754-2406 or your local county extension office.

'Q' (Question)  (November) When is the best time for planting fruit trees like apple, plum, cherry, pear and peach in Little Rock? Where are the nurseries or other sources for the above mentioned trees in
central Arkansas?

'A' (Answer)  Today, many fruit trees are sold as container grown trees, and thus can be planted at any time. For best selection both in quality and variety of tree, most nurseries start getting in a good selection in February. The majority of our nurseries do carry at least some fruit trees. A few actually specialize in them. If you have specific varieties you are looking for, you may want to visit with your local nurseryman this fall and place an order.
