Bulbs - Lily (General)
Back to Bulbs

'Q' (Question)  (May) Are you supposed to cut lily flowers when they have bloomed and start dying back? Will they produce more flowers if you do? Where on the stem should you cut them?

'A' (Answer)  Most lilies only contain one set of flowers, so deadheading will not encourage more blooms, but it will prevent seed set, so more energy should be directed into the bulb. It also tends to make the plants more attractive to clip off the spent flowers. Simply cut beneath the flower head when you prune. Allow the foliage to grow until it begins to yellow and die back.
