Bulbs - Arum
Back to Bulbs

'Q' (Question)  I’ve had the enclosed plant growing on the side of my house for many years. I don’t think it has ever frozen. It stays outside year-round. Would you tell me its name?

'A' (Answer)  The plant in question is an arum. They begin growing with the cooler weather of fall or early winter. They often die down completely to the ground when hot weather occurs. They have the potential to produce a stalk of orange or red berries. They have very decorative variegated leaves and do well in partial to full shade.

'Q' (Question)  The plant I have sent you, comes up in my yard, puts up a stalk with red berries on it and then dies down when it gets hot in the summer. It will then revive after a killing frost. What is it?

'A' (Answer)  The plant in question is an Arum, Arum italicum. It has wonderful variegated foliage, grows best in a shade or woodland garden. They flourish in rich, moist soil.
