Annuals - Weed Control
Back to Annuals

'Q' (Question)  My flower beds were overrun by grass this summer. It was so hot, I didn’t pay enough attention to weeding. I see the ads for pre-emergent herbicides and was wondering if that would work in my flower beds next year. I don’t want to damage my flowers and shrubs, but I do need help with the grass.

'A' (Answer)  The main grassy weed we have is Bermuda grass. Bermuda grass is a perennial, meaning the plant begins growing from the existing plant and roots each season--not from seed. Pre-emergent products only work on annual plants that are germinating from seed. A pre-emergent herbicide inhibits the seed from germinating, thus giving you no weed. It doesn’t work on perennials. Now that the weather has cooled off, try to eradicate as much of the grass out of your flower beds as possible. Mulch to keep it at bay. Next spring, as your plants begin growing, watch for grass problems. If caught early enough, they can be hand weeded, or there is a grass-specific herbicide on the market. Poast, Grass-b-gone or a similar product, makes short work of grass removal. It doesn’t harm your other plants. It also won’t kill other non-grassy weeds.
