I just bought a hanging
basket filled with something called torenia, and I'm wondering about its care.
The tag says it's very heat-resistant and needs regular watering. Should I keep
the trailing greenery pinched back to encourage growth and blooms? Should I
pinch off the blossoms themselves? And what exactly is torenia?
Torenia, is a summer annual also called wishbone flower. It is best grown in a shadier environment--not full afternoon sun at least. It takes the heat great, but shouldn't be allowed to get too dry. The Clown series is most common, however this year there is a new large flowered form. They have been around now for several years. The most common color is purple, but there are pinks, whites and even an occasional yellow form. It makes a fine border plant in the ground, or hanging basket. If it begins to get leggy, pinch it back to help it bush back out.
